Boolean search basics

Combine words or phrases to build a search.  

Search example: slave* AND plantation* AND ("american south" OR "united states") 

  • Use AND to connect topics - geography AND slavery
  • Use OR for synonyms or related terms and surround with parentheses - (plantation OR farm)
  • Place phrases of 2+ words in quotation marks - "united states"
  • Use asterisk(*) to locate alternate endings - geograph* will locate geography, geographical, or geographers
