- Use AND to connect topics - geography AND slavery
- Use OR for synonyms or related terms and surround with parentheses - (plantation OR farm)
- Place phrases of 2+ words in quotation marks - "united states"
- Use an asterisk(*) to locate alternate endings - geograph* will locate geography, geographical, or geographers
