Another recent research study shows college student use of social media demonstrates a desire to belong and to be loved:
"The results of this study reinforce the literature by showing that college students’ desire to belong plays an important role in motivating them to use social media and smartphones to communicate with others. Namely, the higher levels of desire students have to be part of a social group and to be loved, the higher chance they will engage in communication through digital media. College students use digital media to interact with others to fulfill their psychological needs." (Kim et al., 2016, p. 267)
